YACHT make their first appearance as headliners at Neumos on Thursday. This little DIY-style indie band is named after a high school program entitled Young Americans Challenging High Technology, which YACHT Mastermind Jona notes valued technology as well as discouraged it. Jona has since been interested in exploring that duality, and the mixture of black and white can often be seen at their performances, like in the one below, from a performance for “Dinner with the Band” for the Independent Film Channel. Jona is wearing all white while Singer Claire is in all black, and they have black and white banners behind them (that were also used throughout that tour).
Jona has compared Underground Music Culture to Underground religious culture (oddly enough, the fourth annual Seattle Occultural Music Festival occurs concurrently with this show, as well as the next 2 nights after it). YACHT are true DIY Northwest Musicians hailing from Portland, Oregon, that have not only sculpted a unique electronic chanting sound that is too irresistible not to dance to, but also created an elaborate multi-media light show via powerpoint and other tools on a limited budget. Having just recently played Coachella, as well as The Hollywood Bowl, and moving up from playing DIY venues such as The Vera Project to this week’s show at Neumos (as well as having just released their last record on James Murphy (of LCD Soundsystem)’s DFA Records), it doesn’t seem that their technology has necessarily been upgraded, nor does it need to be.YACHT ’s music pulls you in, and every part of their show has always been quality. An upgrade that has occurred is that they are now performing with a bassist and drummer (go ahead and try to look away from Jona and Claire’s eccentric dance moves to even notice those other guys on stage).
Claire is a media artist in addition to being the female vocalist in YACHT; she works extensively with Jona on creating the visuals for their live show.
YACHT is part of the latest DIY Music Scene, and they seem to be making a huge impression on the general public everywhere, following in the footsteps of tUnE-yArDs. Thursday night’s show is sure to be a good time, but don’t forget to bring a towel, as infectious dancing will be uncontrollable. And whatever you do, don’t drink the kool-aid.
