Will Johnson (Centro-matic, South San Gabriel), Jay Farrar (Son Volt, Gob Iron, Uncle Tupelo), Yim Yames (My Morning Jacket, Monsters of Folk), and Anders Parker (Varnaline, Gob Iron)  have formed a super-group to celebrate Woody Guthrie. They’ve made an album called New Multitudes, and they’ll be showing it off tomorrow night at the Showbox at the Market.  If the massive name-dropping wasn’t enough to get you excited, just wait until you hear the music. It’s the best parts of relaxation-folk and heartfelt performance. There is a montage clip below that will give you a taste of their sound.

Also on deck will be Chris Cunningham. He’ll be opening the night with a solo show…a solo show with the assistance of bandmate Brantley Duke and guest Samuel Miller. Who knows, maybe Matt Badger will come.

Chris Cunningham is getting around with his solo digs. What creates distinction between his solo shows and Ravenna Woods shows is not the people he is or isn’t playing with, but the library of work that he brings to the table. Cunningham personifies “prolific,” and his songs range from acoustic rock to layered ambient electronica. His brains are on display, and not in the creepy Hannibal kind of way.

If you want to come to the show but don’t have the dough, e-mail contests@ssgmusic.com with the phrase, “Woody Guthrie w/ Chris” in the subject line for your chance to win a pair of tickets. Be sure to include your first and last name for the guest list. We’ll holler back if you win. Follow @SSGPromo to keep you eye on all of our giveaways.

Full disclosure: Nikki Benson is currently doing PR for Ravenna Woods.
