If you think your tongue is getting twisted by trying to pronounce these band names then just imagine how twisted your body will be dancing to their music. Headlining is Turkuaz (pronounced ‘ter-kwaz’) a large band hailing from Brooklyn. How this band will fit on Chop Suey’s stage is really unknown, but with as many members that they have it will make for a dance-filled night. Complete with guiatrs, bass, various percussion, saxophones, trumpet, and many on vocals, Turkuaz has a well-rounded afro-beat sound. World music has seem to made a huge resurgence in the past few years and thankfully this gives us a chance to get touring bands to our neck of the woods like Turkuaz.

Zongo Junction trumps Turkuaz on man-power with an astounding 11 members! Zongo Junction is also an afro-beat group from Brooklyn area that put out an amazing sound. Their brass section truly delivers and their bass lines are deep and funk-filled. The captivating part about Zongo Junction is how they transform their recorded 2:44 “Oh, Why?” song into a 8:04 live performance (as seen on their Facebook). This goes to show how some afro-beat and world music bands can feed off the energy from the crowd and also themselves to do improv and just jam.

Locals Irukandji Physics of Fusion will be opening up the night with some fresh and funky dance numbers. While Turkuaz has some female vocals, Irukandji Physics of Fusion has Phoenix who steps in on chorus and harmonies. Her voice is absolutely amazing and quite honestly, she’ll end stealing the show. The group blends hip-hop with afro-beat and makes it very organic and flow seamlessly. This show is recommend if you like the Polyrhythmics and Fela Kuti with a dash of Macklemore.
