Win Tickets to see Aloe Blacc at NectarPosted by Joe Gustav
2010 is Aloe Blacc‘s year. Those who have been paying attention since his 2006 debut, Shine Through, could see the flashes of brilliance in the young singer’s mixing-and-matching of influences as diverse as Marvin Gaye, Freestyle Fellowship and Buena Vista Social Club. More heads began to take notice with the recent releases of “Gente Ordinaria,” his Spanish-language cover of John Legend’s “Ordinary People,” and an incredible soul rendition of “Billie Jean,” among other exceptional covers that showcased a vastly improved voice.
But it was not until “I Need A Dollar” — and its subsequent feature as the theme song for HBO’s How to Make It in America – that Blacc became one of the foremost R&B singers of the time. His new album, Good Things, is one of the best albums of the year, period. His pained, soaring vocals provide the perfect soundtrack to an era where American resolve is being tested, but so far, not broken. These modern-day blues will be on display at Nectar with backing provided by the Grand Scheme, the musicians featured in the “Billie Jean” cover. Also performing are Maya Jupiter, an Australian hip-hop artist on her first US tour, and Dice, Seattle’s resident first lady of hip-hop. dj100proof, who has a ridiculous knowledge of soul music, will be holding down on the 1′s and 2′s.
