With Volkswagen bogarting Google search results on Touareg, it is possible that you have never heard of the nomadic rebels of North Africa. But, that’s OK. Get down to the Showbox on Tuesday for Tinariwen and witness an epic evening filled with poetic guitars and world music by a band whose genesis is rooted in tumultuous North Africa. Soul rebels, Tinariwen, from the southern Sahara desert are a band of poets and musicians. Their music has been celebrated and their backstory hailed as “dramatic” and “hard bitten”. Tinariwen is a band that has found freedom in simplicity and their live performance is a shared human experience that finds hope in the strength of community. So share a little humanity and skedaddle down to the Showbox.
Portland’s folk-stars Y La Bamba will be on hand Tuesday evening to provide ethereal melodies and beautiful songs ripe with deep emotion. Y La Bamba’s music draws heavily on Mexican influences and striking arrangements. The result is captivating mariachi-inspired indie folk. NPR describes front woman Luz Elena Mendoza’s voice as “…otherworldly…It is light and ethereal yet seemingly tortured —she sings with deep emotion, if not pain.”
