Often the word solo carries a lonely connotation—but not for John Darnielle and not for the latest Mountain Goats tour. The definition better suited to Darnielle’s trek across North America is: unaided, unrestricted, and unsupervised. This remarkable solo tour will kick off at the Columbia City Theater  and will showcase Darnielle undiluted. The potent poetry and thoughtful songwriting that has garnered a dedicated fan base will be on full display in an intimate setting. In a post on the Mountain Goats website, Darnielle pays homage to the genesis of his guitar playing and the catalyst that sent him down the musical career path. He describes his songs as “finding ways to call a dark dungeon a glittering castle and really mean it.” And mean it he does. His music is honest and artful — the songs crafted into poetic gems that lead the listener through an empathetic landscape and leaves them hopeful that the glittering castle is real. The Mountain Goats solo tour will bring Darnielle’s career full circle, as the final show will be played at the Folk Music Center where he escaped his childhood bullies and learned to play the guitar. This rare solo show should not be missed.

Opening the show will be Dustin Wong - a guitar player that deftly manipulates and explores sound with a collection of pedals and a keen ear for constructing an intricate musical tapestry. He works in textures and patterns, with a result that has been called “stunning” and “triumphant”.  Wong’s latest release Dreams Say, View, Create, Shadow Leads has been described by Pitchfork as “piles of such exquisitely crafted sonic fabrics” and “an aural Rorschach test”.
