In support of his 2013 album the North Borders (Ninja Tune), British DJ Bonobo (Simon Green) will perform at Showbox at the Market this Thursday. Releasing music since 2001, Bonobo’s integration into the electronic scene has been gradual, capitulated with no one hit record, but rather, consistency of his efforts and longevity of his presence on the scene.
The North Borders picks up where the artist’s 2010 record Black Sands left off, floating along with the effortless ease that we’ve come to expect from Bonobo. The ethereal and gorgeously hypnotic instrumental standout track “Cirrus,” finds the artist embracing percussive accents to break up each melody. Elsewhere, on “Heaven for the Sinner,” Erykah Badu lends her soulful crooning to enhance Bonobo’s meticulous arrangements. Peppered with harp notes, the track revolves around a basic 4-bar loop, shuffling back and forth before meandering to a close. Badu’s vocals naturally compliment Bonobo’s simple melodies without seeming overwhelming. Fellow Ninja Tune artist Grey Reverend (featured on The North Borders’ track “First Fires”) will perform also perform on Thursday.
