Win Tickets: Russian Circles at Neumos 6/24
All Hail Russian CirclesPosted by Nikki Benson
Russian Circles, a three piece instrumental metal band, will be ravaging Nuemos tomorrow night. The band is in the midst of an extensive tour in support of their fourth studio release, Empros, which was named #29 of the top 50 albums of 2011 by SSG Music. Staff Member Gabriel Arguelles commented:
Russian Circles promised their 2011 Empros would be their heaviest, most dynamic record to date. Though they had high aspirations for this release, their formulaic approach (heavy instrumentals that build up and have a solid crunch with some guitar noodling thrown in) dominated their three previous releases, making their promises sound a bit highfalutin. Empros, however, lived up to the hype. They’ve added layers and melody to their sound without losing any of their dark aesthetic and made this release one of the best metal albums of the year.
Check out the intense, captivating “Mladek”. This song showcases the bands filled out sound along with their ability to tell complex stories through thorough, progressive soundscapes. Hold your breath around the 3:11 mark–Mike Sullivan’s ominous guitar tapping sounds reminiscent to Dave Knudson circa Botch, specifically “Transitions from Persona to Object” off Botch’s 2009 release, We Are The Romans.
Those hints from the past combined with the fact that Botch bass player Brian Cook is the bass player for Russian Circles makes tomorrow night’s show irresistible for any mathcore metalhead.
