At SSG Music, we’re huge supporters of DIY ethics, and the beginning of folk-pop outlet Loney Dear’s story embodies that drive. After home-recording his debut album in Jonkoping, Sweden during 2003, Loney Dear (aka Emil Svanängen) gained popularity solely by word-of-mouth amongst those who had seen him in concert or visited his website. From that time onward, Svanängen self-released two more albums, one of which, Loney, Noir, Sub Pop Records picked up for re-issue is 2007.
His most recent two albums have been released on Polyvinyl, including Dear John in 2009 and Hall Music in 2011. Between these two releases, Svanängen returned to Sweden after a tour in the United States to begin playing shows with chamber orchestras throughout the country. Subsequently, Hall Music was substantially influenced by these experiences; although a singular contender, Svanängen embodies an orchestra by himself in this record and in live performances, showing that his DIY ideals are still intact.
