Beirut has grown from the largest city in Lebanon to one of the largest bands in America. What started as a solo project for Zach Condon later turned into a full-fledged national act touring festivals left and right. The New Mexico native mentioned to NPR that a trip to Europe with his brother expanded his musical taste and knowledge and is where he gained his world music influence for Beirut. The Balkan inspiration can be heard throughout Beirut’s latest release, Riptide, which came out last Fall via Condon’s own Pompeii Records. Riptide features more of a pop edge while still holding onto the strong brass section and haunting vocals. Beirut conveys an old-world vibe that is prevalent through their heavy use of trumpets, chipper piano, and low vocals.
