Watch: Liturgy — “Prayer to God”

Liturgy frontman Hunter Hunt-Hendrix most recently appeared on AV Club‘s Undercover series. He covered “Prayer to God” by the noise rock band Shellac.
Although Liturgy are a self-proclaimed “pure transcendental black metal” band, Hunter takes the helm here with a minimal performance. He bypasses his typically harsh vocals for a clean style, layering vocal loops one onto the next. Constructing a chorus between he and himself, a mantra-like effect rises about the room. It is a fittingly liturgical performance for the song’s namesake, which contrasts with the macabre lyrics.
