Walking Around SXSW 2011, March 15th

The Austin Convention Center
I got into Austin around 11:30 on Monday night, Texas time. Due to my lack of foresight in how unappealing airports are to sleep in, I caved and called the guy Chris Govella and I met through some couch surfing site. We weren’t supposed to stay at Drew’s place till Tuesday night but being the saint he is, he allowed me to crash there a night early.
Thus, I am in Austin for this year’s SXSW. I’ve already seen a great deal of music I’ve never heard of, mostly at the outskirts of the festival at the venues where you don’t need any credentials to get into. More on that throughout the week. For now I’ll describe the scenery pictorially to give everyone a rough idea of what I saw yesterday. I’ll do this each day.
These scan things are everywhere. Their presence annoys me.

I haven’t seen any street vendors so far that sell fruit.
Those guys were there.
A large amount of the official venues are located on 6th East. Allegedly this place is a zoo on normal weekends. This week it’ll be the Amazon. (Above: Emo’s)

Later that night…
Friends I made. Clockwise from the left, Ray Ray (local), Mal, and Simon, touring together from New York as Mal Blum. Taken at Cheer Up Charlies.
This is a teeter-totter that is a mustache. Mustache rides. Ha. Ha.

Yeahhhh, we rode it…
What’s everyone looking at?
Oh, the smoking art gallery across the street…bummer.

Here’s a bunch of picts from the main drag. They don’t communicate how truly crowded it was since people tend to notice big ass cameras and get out of the way.

More to come along with some actual music.
