As many know, The Head and the Heart came together at Ballard’s own Conor Byrne. Even though they’re playing a show with Death Cab for Cutie at Key Arena and touring with My Morning Jacket, members of the band still drop by the ol‘ Byrne for an open mic spot from time to time. Last Sunday was one of those times. As word got out that Jonathan Russell, Josiah Johnson, and Kenny Hensley were in the house, the place started to fill up. Jonathan Russell was set to play at 11:30; The Head and the Heart fans were getting ready for it.

I took the opportunity to introduce myself to Jonathan and Kenny and let them know that “Down in the Valley” was a song that I listened to in a tender moment and it brought me to tears. Unknown to me at the time, Jon and Kenny looked at each other and decided to put that song on their three song set list, the only Head and the Heart song in circulation to be played that night.  People crowded into Conor Byrne and sat on the floor to watch it. It was a really special performance.

Fortunately for Head and the Heart fans the world over, Eratosthenes Fackenthall was on hand. Not only did he capture “Down in the Valley,” he also recorded a new song, “No One to Let You Down,” under the beautiful moonlight and street lamps of the Ballard strip. Check it out!
