Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, two members of the Russian punk group Pussy Riot, were sentenced to work in Mordovian and Serbian labor camps until March 2014.
The women had appealed to serve their sentences in Moscow to be nearer to their small children, but this request was denied. Conditions in the labor camps are reportedly terrible, and the group tweeted that these were the “harshest” of labor camps.
Earlier this month one of the members, 30 year old Yekaterina Samutsevich was freed, and before that two other members of the group were able to flee Russia. Speculation is that Samutsevich was released only to make the government appear more sympathetic.
Pussy Riot recently staged a new protest, thanking Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Green Day among others for their support throughout the trial. In the video they also burn the image of Vladmir Putin while scaling the side of the building.
