Whitney Ballen and the Intimates is an upbeat quintet, headed by singer/songwriter Whitney Ballen. Their music is not quite folk, no quite country, but definitely catchy, with poppy instrumental interludes between Ballen’s verses. She is currently working on a 9-song vinyl record that will capture all of her most recent work. Supporting Whitney Ballen and the Intimates will be Elk and Boar and Parlours, the former being an acoustic folk project and the latter an indie pop group from Des Moines.
Sex Slaves, New Liberty, Above Ground, The 69 Lines @ El Corazon | 8/19 | 7 pm | $8 adv/ $10 dos (Get Tickets) | All-Ages
On the other hand, if acoustic/folk isn’t your cup of tea, then check out Sex Slaves at El Corazon. The hard rock trio has toured the globe and released three full-length albums, all without a record label, which is impressive in this day and age. The instrumental sections of SS’s music leans more towards the metal variety, with extremely quick, yet tight riffs, but scales back for the verse to allow the vocals to ride to the top. Choruses are characterized by full band screaming/chanting as they return to a full sonic assault from the slightly toned down verse. Sex Slaves will be supported by New Liberty, Above Ground and The 69 Lines.
