Headlining tonight’s show at The Vera Project is Canadian rock band Young Empires. For being such a young band, (no pun intended), Young Empires have amassed an impressive resume, performing at the Nem-Catacoa Festival, The Juno Awards, and North-by-Northeast Music Festival. Their music is lively, upbeat, and self-proclaimed as “world beat haute-rock,” with haute being in reference to the African and Latin America percussion instruments seen in many tracks. Young Empires’ song “White Doves,” from their first EP, reached number 12 on the Canadian Alt. Rock charts. They have also recently signed a record deal with Pirates Blend Recordings, a recently launched label that allows bands to remain entirely independent and autonomous with regards to their own decision making. At The Crocodile tonight is Velella Velella, who’s headlining a quartet of indie/funk/pop bands that are the definition of party music, without all of the excessive rap-bass. Since being formed nine years ago, the quartet has released a five-track EP as well as a full length album in 2007 on Hush Records. Their music draws influences from both classic and modern funk icons, such as Parliament-Funkadelic, and Stereolab. Be sure not to miss Velella Velella, supported by Continental Soldiers, Screens, and OC Notes, and then joining them for a special party in The Crocodile Back Bar!
