Nikki Benson / January 7, 2012

Small bands with big sounds.

KEXP Audioasis: Constant Lovers, Grayskul, Monogamy Party @ The Sunset Tavern | 9pm | $8 at the door | 21+

Seattleites who were into hardcore in the late ’90s to the mid 2000s are going to be extremely excited about Monogamy Party. They have a pure energy that commands the listener to thrash on the dance floor. They’ve got the neo-distortion, garage rock sound perfected, screamo vocals, and they’ve even got a math infusion that will make the geekiest of music-heads smile. Monogamy Party is the most exciting band of their ilk since These Arms are Snakes circa Oxeneers. They’re opening up for KEXP’s Audioaces showcase tonight at the Sunset Tavern. Doors are at 9, show starts at 10.

Smooth SailingSerial Hawk, X Suns, O Great Leader @ Blue Moon | 8pm | $6 at the door | 21+

Holy wow! Smooth Sailing is going to knock the wind out of anyone smart enough to venture out to Blue Moon tonight. This must be mid-2000s hardcore night in Seattle; Smooth Sailing is bringing back the vocal aesthetic of Northwest cult icons Harkonen, but with their own added twist of post-rock sensibilities. These guys have been playing shows around Seattle for a hot minute. Head over to Blue Moon to night to find out what all the fuss is about.
