JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound’s cover of Wilco’s “I am Trying to Break your Heart” is so good, so exciting, and so much fun that I had to use it for tonight’s preview over their original tracks. But what “I am Trying to Break your Heart” does is show any new listener to the band what it is that this modern, nuanced soul act is capable of.

The odd pairing of JC Brooks and El Corazon happens tonight, and any music fan not there will have missed out.

California-born and Hawaiian-raised Donavon Frankenreiter took a very similar route to a childhood friend of his, Jack Johnson. Both are well-known for their surfing abilities, Frankenreiter was signed to Billabong which prompted the move to Hawaii, as well as their raspy-laden vocals on top of acoustic guitars or ukuleles. Frankenreiter’s protege went on to start up his own label, Brushfire Records, which Frankenreiter later on released his self-titled debut album. His latest release is Recycled Recipes Volume 2 which is a covers album and he is out on tour promoting. With the first day of Spring being just last week it seems fitting to have Frankenreiter swing through Seattle and get everyone excited and ready for Summer.

Frankenreiter uses a variety of instruments in his recordings but has been using ukulele, lap steel, and slack key guitars to give his music more of the surf vibe. Known for his iconic mustache, long curly locks, and guitar, Frankenreiter sings about how to live life to the fullest and just having a good time. This surf-rocker definitely has the meaning of life figured out and emits good vibes wherever he plays. Be sure to check out this legendary surf-rocker while he is in town at The Crocodile with his bandmate Matt Grundy.
