Tonight marks the one year anniversary of us collectively jumping on the Night Bus and traversing down electronic avenues otherwise unexplored throughout Seattle at the incredibly intimate and now defunct The Living Room. What started as a monthly DJ night, “Hush Hush” has now turned into it’s own slowriding entity, Hush Hush Records (as we’ve documented), with KEXP’s DJ Alex Ruder at the helm and local 22-year-old rainy-day, late-night beat maker Kid Smpl as the label’s flagship artist.
To those just getting on the Night Bus, the music is diverse but manages to fall within it’s own heavily emotional, dissonant yet beautiful universe. Marked with deep, perpetual bass lines and a mixture of everything from classical string arrangements, stark ambience and hip-hop beats to ethereal and enveloping voice samples – this is escapist music, the kind of music you listen to while getting lost in the chaos of big city living or while taking a 3am walk through rain soaked streets – which may explain the ever-growing popularity within Seattle.
So tonight we get together to celebrate Hush Hush Records’ quick rise from a tiny DJ night to full-fledged electronic scene-maker and it’s all happening at Vermillion with the wide ranging and beautifully put together lineup: Kid Smpl, Dropping Gems alumni DJAO, and Seattle based producers Domokos, Catacombkid (half of Odesza) and label founder DJ D’Nelski (Alex Ruder).
Best of all – it’s free! So swing by, take a chance and quick ride on the Night Bus. If you like what you hear stick around and make sure to go to the still active and growing Hush Hush monthly DJ nights over at Arabica Coffee Lounge.
This Friday The Redwood Plan are bringing their seductive, high energy show to Neumos to celebrate the release of their new album Green Light Go! To join in on the festivities Seattle’s Head Like a Kite and Vox Mod will be there to start the party off along with Brooklyn via Seattle band Chaos Chaos (formerly of Smoosh).
