Preview by Chris Green:
Codeine‘s first US release, Frigid Stars, came out on Sub Pop Records in 1992, and the band broke up 2 years (one EP and one LP) later. Codeine were one of the pioneers of the slowcore sound. Their songs move at a languid tempo that allows the listener to be swept away by the guitar tone and drifting reverbed vocals. During their brief career, lineup changes within the band had them recording with members of Squirrel Bait, Antietam, and B*tch Magnet.
After 16 years or so of playing in other bands, the original members were contacted about releasing a box set of all of their original recordings and a large volume of unreleased material. This came out as 2011′s When I See The Sun. Renewed interest caused them to be solicited by Mogwai to reunite for his curated I’ll Be Your Mirror festival (known for high profile reunions) in London. The band decided to do a short tour after their May festival gig, which has them visiting us in Seattle for two nights at the Triple Door.
Each night will have a different opening band. On the 9th, British singer/songwriter Scout Nibllet (she takes her stage name from the character in “To Kill a Mockingbird”) will be starting things off. On the 10th, Rivulets (AKA Denver singer Nathan Amundson) will be the opener.
