Have a free Friday evening?  Like instrumental bands?  Then go see Grails at The Crocodile; seriously, these guys are that good.  Grails is an instrumental group out of Portland, Oregon that combines elements of both Post and Psychedelic Rock in their sound.  Playing on a whim in 1999 under the name Laruel Canyon, Grails garnered many positive reviews that pushed original members Alex Hall, Emil Amos, and Paul Spitz to record two self-financed EPs with the help of Timothy Horner and Bill Slater.  In total, the band has released eight full length LPs, their most recent being Deep Politics.  The aggressive sound captured on disc carries over surprisingly well to the stage with band members often switching insturments during the set, which further complements the band’s already dynamic sound.  Supporting Grails at The Crocodile is the immensely difficult to classify True Widow, who are attempting to add the “stonegaze” genre to the music scene.

Gravel Road might be one of the best bands you’ve never heard of.  Boasting a travel log of over 60,000 miles around the globe, Gravel Road has somehow had success playing live shows, yet remained out of the limelight.  How?  By simply playing.  The band was formed in 2004 by three people who loved to play music.  After releasing a record in the same year, Gravel Road began touring with a mindset of simply playing and occasionally recording to document their journey.  Gravel Road finally received some well-earned recognition when they became the backing band for blues man T Model Ford, and have since been gaining fame and recognition.  When touring on their own, GR plays an infectious blend of rock and blues that is catchy and upbeat.  Be sure to catch them at Columbia City Theater with bellydance fusion troupe Sirens of Serpentine and Last Watch.
