TWDY, Mountains & Amen Dunes @ Casa del Popolo | 8pm | Sunday 5 February | 18+
I love the Material Girl as much as the next guy, but if Madonna’s Super Bowl Half Time performance doesn’t have you bursting with anticipation, perhaps you should spend Sunday night at Casa getting your ears blown by This Will Destroy You instead. This band seems to always be on the road, and their perseverance has paid off. Their latest LP Tunnel Blanket impressed the critics, solidifying TWDY as a forward-thinking outfit that couldn’t dismissed as just another post-rock act. Tunnel Blanket even came in at 33 on SSG’s top 50 albums of 2011. Like similar-minded powerhouses Mogwai and Caspian, they are best experience live. If you’re sensitive to loud volumes, make sure you bring out the ear plugs.
Also performing will be Brooklyn’s Mountains, worth the ticket price alone. Their 2009 Thrill Jockey debut Choral was a masterpiece of hazy electro-acoustic experimentation. It’s follow-up, last year’s Air Museum saw the duo experimenting solely with analog effects in place of computer processing. Their recent touring has continued to explore this avenue, which should endear them to Montreal’s own eccentric analog electronic community. Amen Dunes open
