The Mynabirds come to The Sunset Tavern

The Mynabirds, The Grandtours, Like Lightning @ Sunset Tavern | 07/15 | 9pm | $8

The Mynabirds is the latest project spearheaded by Laura Burhenn, she of various solo records and at least one LP with the fantastic Georgie James (a duo with ex Q and not U drummer John Davis). The style of music, and consequently Burhenn’s vocals in The Mynabirds are almost unrecognizable. She’s taken an entirely different approach here, one of thick, lush Rn’B , motown, soul, and early rock n’ roll. Her vocals are smoky and sultry. There’s nothing approaching the poppy, quirky indie rock of her previous projects, and yet it makes sense that the current Mynabirds tour has shows with both Al Green and David Bazan.

If Georgie James (who I loved and have seen at the Sunset Tavern, too) had to be sacrificed for The Mynabirds to happen, I guess I’m pretty okay with it.

The warmth of her video for “The Numbers Don’t Lie,” the first single off of the well-reviewed  What we Lose in the Fire we Gain in the Flood is an indicator of what music fans are in for if they check out the show this Wednesday night at the beloved  Sunset Tavern. This will be a good one, what with the band just at arm’s length.
