The Flaming Lips have hinted that they will replace Erykah Badu in the the controversial video from their Heady Fwends collaboration.

Wayne Coyne – frontman for The Flaming Lips – and neo-soul artist Erykah Badu are currently entangled in a music video mess. The Flaming Lips video for their song “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face” features Erykah as well as her sister Nayrok.

The focus of the clip itself – as well as the controversy – concerns Nayrok’s nude body in a tub rolling about in blood and glitter. The music video, which was initially hosted on Pitchfork’s a few weeks ago, was retroactively pulled after Coyne claimed in a press release that “The video link that was erroneously posted…The Flaming Lips accept full responsibility for prematurely having Pitchfork post it.”

Evidently, this official apology did not appease Erykah Badu, who responded in a series of tweets the following day. In summation, she said she was surprised and disgusted by their decision to leak the video without consulting her or her sister during the process; that she “would give [his] edit a chance” which apparently did not come to fruition. She signed off telling Mr. Coyne “you can kiss my glittery ass.”

The video has been taken down and is likely to remain that way. In an interview with O Music Awards Wayne Coyne noted that “I’m talking with [Dresden Dolls singer] Amanda Palmer about remaking the video and having Amanda sing it and just be in the video.” Once the dust settles and the drama subsides, perhaps the music video remake will help both artists move on.
