For years Olympia and Portland have had a very odd symbiotic relationship; or if you ask some, parasitic. This week the relationship went to the next level with a full on invasion of Portland bands with Olympia ties.

In one venue, Le Voyeur, Portland’s Shivas and Hooded Hags (both of whom have strong ties to K Records) performed with K Records head hancho Calvin Johnson; yet at another venue, The Brotherhood, Hurry Up (with strong ties with former Olympia, now Portland label Kill Rock Stars) performed with Western Hymn and The Maxines.

While Le Voyeur and the Brotherhood were rocking, a more subdued show was going on at the recently reopened Northern, the Olympia All Ages Project venue. So on a Sunday you had three stellar shows to choose from in a three block radius; not bad for such a small town.

Summer in Olympia usually signals a mass exodus of students, and also bands; this means updates are usually just about who is gone. This summer you can expect to see Hysterics, Milk Music, The Maxines and a slew of other bands hitting the road around the US.
