Local singer/songwriter Nouela Johnston has long been on the radar in the local music scene as People Eating People and is now reemerging under the moniker Nouela. The classically-trained pianist has dipped her hands in multiple instruments for her new album, Chants, which is set to be released via The Control Group on June 12. Her first single “Fight” starts out at full speed with hand-claps and Johnston’s raspy sultry vocals that are reminiscent of Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. The catchy song is extremely upbeat even without insane drum beats or guitar solos, but the simplicity of Nouela’s vocals paired with handclaps, piano, and guitar make “Fight” a fantastic song that is a sure hit.

Nouela will be performing at the Comet Tavern on April 27 and the Sunset Tavern on June 10.
