Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s current Prime Minister, has announced his support of seeing the three members of Pussy Riot freed from jail.
Maria Alyokhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Yekaterina Samutsevich are part of the feminist punk group; they were arrested back in February following their brief performance of a protest song. They recited “Our Lady, Chase Putin Out” at Moscow’s Christ the Saviour Cathedral.
According to Medvedev’s words, “keeping the three women in prison would be unproductive…a suspended sentence would be sufficient, taking into account the time they have already spent in custody.” He said so amongst the United Russia party.
The women’s trial concluded recently, resulting in a guilty verdict for “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred or hostility” with a sentence of two years in prison. During the trial and since, numerous individuals and organizations have spoke out about the injustice against them.
At present, they are appealing their conviction.
