Roots drummer Questlove, or ?uestlove, is going to offer a class at New York University.
This spring the noted music aficionado will be teaching a course about what it takes to be a part of the musical canon. According to Billboard selected listening albums for the two credit course include Sly & The Family Stone‘s Stand! and There’s A Riot Goin’ On, Aretha Franklin‘s Lady Soul, Led Zeppelin IV, Prince‘s Dirty Mind, Michael Jackson‘s Off The Wall and the Beastie Boys‘ Paul’s Boutique.
The genius of the course lies with National Public Radio intern Austin Cooper‘s controversial review of Public Enemy‘s It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, which ?uestlove responded to with the idea of education – that it is the job of the young to learn why and how things are/become classics. Though the intern’s opinions might have been seen with hatred back when his review first came out, there’s no doubt that this course, “Classic Albums” has Austin Cooper to thank for its existence.
?uestlove will teach the course alongside Universal Music’s Harry Weinger at the Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
