The trial has finally ended for feminist punk collective Pussy Riot after eight days of hearings in Moscow; a verdict is expected August 17.
After a guerrilla, minute-long performance by the group at Christ the Saviour Cathedral during which the members “shouted a punk prayer,” three Pussy Riot members were arrested and jailed for “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.” Although, the act was strictly a political move aimed at the group’s distate for Vladimir Putin’s intent to run for office again.
Prosecutors intend to imprison the three women for three years, and according to Russian news outlet Rian, a judge will read the final verdict on August 17.
Amnesty International and several artists like Bjork and Bikini Kill have come out in support of Pussy Riot through statements and benefit events. You can support the movement for their freedom at Freepussyriot.org.
