Electronic Canadian duo Purity Ring is set to stop at Neumos this Wednesday in support of their stellar debut album Shrines (4AD) released this July. Hailing from Montreal, members Corin Roddick (production) and Megan James (vocals) have garnered quite a bit of buzz surrounding the release of their first LP. The band tie together elements of post-rave and witch house with catchy club beats effectively creating their own niche in the world of electronica. Underpinning the band’s material is a lyrical theme of “the body” with Megan referencing permeation of the skin on various tracks: “get a little closer/let it fold/cut open my sternum and pull my little ribs around you,” she sings on standout track “Fineshrine.” Paired with pitch-shifting vocal effects and head-bobbing melodies, the evocative lyrical content of Purity Ring’s material only serves to heighten the intrigue. Live, the group performs in clothing designed and hand-stitched by Megan, while Corin controls both the lighting and music with a machine that he made himself. Not bad.
Performing with Purity Ring is UK-based producer Joshua Leary, who goes by Evian Christ. Leary caught the attention of Tri Angle Records after posting a series of videos on YouTube featuring mashed up aughts-era hip hop samples over ambient and electronica beats last December. By February, he had released a mixtape, Kings and Them, featuring re-mastered versions of the songs and now, he’s taking them on the road. Notably, Evian Christ’s “Thrown Like Jacks” features the rapping of American hip hop artist Tyga over an ambient loop from indie/electronic artist Grouper.
