Preview – Calvin Johnson at the Crystal Ballroom 8/22Posted by Aaron Sharpsteen
One of the perks of living in the Pacific Northwest is the opportunity to regularly interact with the royalty of independent music. Portlanders have yet another occasion to do so on Wednesday night, when former Halo Bender and founder of K Records Calvin Johnson rolls into the Crystal Ballroom on a tour which is helping to promote several bands who have chosen to release their material via cassette tape. Johnson is performing with a slew of local musicians, all of whom make an appearance on a mixtape curated by Johnson called Love Songs for Lamps. Besides the golden opportunity to gain some exposure to some of Portland’s finest independent acts, Johnson is also performing himself. 10 dollars to see 10 local bands and an indie rock legend is well worth it, just make sure to get to the Crystal a bit early, with all the bands playing the show gets off to an early start at 7pm. Information about the compilation that Johnson has curated can be found here.
