Portland continues to prove that it has one of the best heavy music scenes in the country with the resurrection of Eolian Empire, a record label known for its DIY ethos and commitment to distributing the best heavy underground music Portland has to offer. They are releasing a massive 26 song compilation called Keep Our Heads on May 1 on cassette and digital format, and later in April Portlanders will be lucky enough to catch a 2 night showcase curated by the label and featuring some of the bands with songs on the release.

SSG is exclusively streaming one of the songs from the upcoming compilation, “Bitches Leave,” a swirling, disturbing effort by Fist Fite, which happens to be the first recording from the band in about five years. Vocalist Jonnie Ray Monroe takes the ferocity associated with Fist Fite’s live performances and distills it here, with wailing vocals and piercing screams over music that brazenly smashes different genres together. There are no immediate comparisons, although fans of Kylesa might find some of the terrain familiar, save for the synth leads. Fist Fite’s music is somewhere between angry sex and sexy fighting – and this song represents their aesthetics well – especially the transition from the spacy, synth-laden bridge to the crushing, head-bang inducing riff that follows. Given that this is just one song out of 26 on the compilation, fans of experimental heavy music everywhere have reason to be waiting on the edge of their seats for Eolian Empire to release Keep Our Heads.
