It may be on a lot of peoples wish lists, but the Smiths are not reuniting, despite hopeful hysteria that swept the online community to the contrary.

Yesterday British website Music-News.com reported that the Smiths were in talks to reform for a major fall tour, based on “a source” reporting that the band have been discussing the notion with a “well known promoter.” This led to major music news-sources adopting the story as gospel and running with it. Everyone from NME to Pitchfork ran with headlines stating that the Smiths would reform; even those who where skeptical.

The entire story seemed too good to be true, in light of the fact that we reported on Johnny Marr’s comments regarding reforming the Smiths just last month.

The viral speed at which the story spread after the initial story soon hit a brick wall when Marr commented on his Facebook, “”[That] the rumour of the Smiths reunion is untrue. It’s not happening.”

Drummer Mike Joyce has also denied the reports during his show on internet station Beatwolf Radio. According to the Daily Mirror, he said: “When I first heard about it I was… to say surprised and rather shocked was a bit of an understatement. Obviously I had to keep my emotions in check because there’s a lot of people in the office. Joyce continued, “It’s not happening folks, as far as I know – which could be a good thing.”

Following the rigmarole, the question begs to be asked, do people just want this so bad that they are making news up to push the idea? Or is there some secret legitimacy to the situation? By most accounts it is ridiculous to expect a Smiths reunion.
