Lately, the world hasn’t seen anything strikingly original come from Andrew W.K.…until now. His most recent musical collaboration entitled, “I’m a Goner” with Soulja Boy and Matt & Kim was created for the Converse project, “Three Artists, One Song.” Converse dubs the track, “your party anthem to end the summer,” and while the track is undeniably catchy, something is amiss. Soulja Boy brings literal swag to the song, while Matt & Kim bring their energetic vocals, but the song severely lacks Andrew W.K. His toe tappin’ single, “Party Hard,” is nearing its tenth birthday (doesn’t that make you feel old?!).
Staying true to that style, the rocker still wears all white, sports bloody flesh wounds, and preaches party tips, however, the intensity he brought to “Party Hard” is lost under the layers of the other artists in this new track, perhaps as he was last to be added to the project. This imbalance is a fail ultimately on Converse’s part. This mash-up is arguably the most diverse and random Converse has put together (the previous tracks feature artists Santigold, Pharrell, and Julian Casablancas together, then Best Coast, Kid Cudi, and Rostam Batmanglij collaborating). Many agree “I’m a Goner” is too mellow to be considered a party song, and with a line-up such as these three, it’s disappointing to find their combined party effort so ‘soft’.
