Neil Young recently commented on his saddened response to events around the time of Kurt Cobain’s passing in his memoir “Waging Heavy Peace“.

Cobain’s infamous suicide in 1994 stunned the world; Young was no different. More painfully, the songwriter for Nirvana directly referenced lyrics of Young’s from “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)” in his suicide note, signing off with the message “it’s better to burn out than to fade away.”

Neil Young speaks frankly about the subject in his book, saying that “when he died and left that note, it struck a deep chord inside of me.” Tragically, in the weeks leading up to Cobain’s unexpected death Young tried to reach him; to say that “[he] thought he was great and he should do exactly what he thought he should do and fuck everybody else.”
