Montreal: Mutek Day 4 picks – Four Tet + Rocketnumber9, Pole

Joseph Sannicandro / June 4, 2011

Four Tet + Rocketnumber9 @  Métropolis | 11pm | $35 + tx & sc

Four Tet will be joining Rocketnumber9 on stage for a transitional, improvisational set before playing his solo set. Kieran Hebden, the man behind Four Tet, started off his musical career playing pass for the British post-rock group Fridge, before turning to the sequencer as his instrument of choice. He made a few records with jazz drummer Steve Reid, focusing more on the improvisational possibilities for his music. All this makes for what should be a fascinating set.

Pole @ SAT | 10pm | FREE

Before that goes down, head over to the SAT for a free showcase designed to spotlight the relationship between Berlin, Buenos Aires and Montreal as three of the first cities to be named UNESCO Cities of Design.  Argentina’s Sol Del Rio kick off the night, followed by local dub producer Deadbeat collaborating with German video artist Lillevan. But the treat on this showcase is canonical Berlin minimal producer Pole‘s first performance at Mutek in over half a decade. Finally, though digital Cumbia may have originated in the folk sounds of Colombia’s Caribbean coast, recently the Argentine’s have been doing innovative things with the genre, and Chancha Via Circuito will give you the run down.

Come by the SAT between 4-6 and 7-9 tonight to take part in the Mutations sound walk, leaving every two minutes.  Ten artists have collaborated on this walk to help reorient your perception of a neighborhood in transition.  Free on your own device or rent one for $5.  Download the Mutek  iPhone app or go here. Then come see some of those artists perform live starting at 7pm at the Place de la Paix for FREE.
