DEEPCHORD presents ECHOSPACE @ Métropolis | Thurs. 2 June | 11pm | $40 + tx & sc
Though big cosmopolitans like New York and Berlin get much of the attention, Detroit has played no less of a role in the evolution of electronic music. Echospace is made up of two Detroit heavyweights, Rob Modell (Deepchord) and Steve Hitchell (Soultek, Intrusion). Combining the influence of minimal Berlin techno ala Basic Channel with dub influences and the flavor of their home town, this rare Montreal appearance by Echospace is not to be missed. Deepchord is both a label and an artist, both of which are worth investigating for fans of ambient leaning beat driven music. Last year Deepchord presents Echospace released Liumin, and Deepchord just released Hash-Bar Loops, two records that are begging for a hazy dance floor reinterpretation. Don’t let them down, Montreal.
To help you get ready, check out this excellent mix made by Rob Modell over at XLR8R’s podcasts, and check out the Japanese field-recording lead track below.
The rest of the night promises to keep the momentum going. One of the brightest lights of Canadian dance music in the last two decades has been Ritchie Hawtin, aka Plastikman. He’ll be performing Plastikman Live, the Canadian debut of his long awaited audio-visual show first conceived of for Mutek 2004.
FREE EVENT OF THE DAY
Another free performance for the rush-hour crowd at the Berri-UQAM metro station, and tons of cool demos, workshops and panels all afternoon, plus the ongoing Mutations sound-walks each day provide plenty to do for free.
