Macklemore at Sasquatch: Review and Photo Set

So about this Macklemore & Ryan Lewis show: it was the best show I’ve ever seen them put on. Macklemore is a self-aware performer. Just about every move he made was photographable. He came out to a very eager crowd of younglings, arms outstretched, repping his Seattle wife beater, a charming smile, and perfectly arranged hair. With all of the touring the band has been doing, he seemed very comfortable, not at all nervous.

Macklemore did a quick roll call to see which decade babies were in the house starting from the ‘60s. There was one dude from that era. A handful of people screamed for the ‘70s, about a thousand for the ‘80s, but the majority of the fans were ‘90s babies. Abbey Simmons of Sound on the Sound and I looked at each other with horror in our eyes. “No! No! Shut up! Shut up,” we said feeling old. Well, my twenty-eight years of life felt old at that moment, anyway. Macklemore then asked who in the audience remembered Labyrinth and David Bowie.

“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH” the crowd responded. He then put on a jean jacket with some fringe that he glued, very ‘80s, very gangster, and commented that what he was most proud of about the jacket was the painting that he had done on the back. BAM!

Rapping, dancing, and a crotch grab ensued.

Other highlights of the show included an abbreviated version of “And We Danced” with one of his fancy costumes, his renegade crowd surfing, the debut of a brand new song, and the finale of “Irish Celebration.” The new song was funky-fresh. He told the audience that if they played the song, everyone would have to wild-the-f***-out for three minutes and fifteen seconds. And so they did. I got my dance on my dang self! It had a bossanova flare to it, but I could be making that up because the feeling of it made me want to salsa. I’m sure there will be news on the new song very soon. Ryan Lewis sang on the new song, and he sounded great! When it was all said and done, we were all happy, proud, and excited to see what the next wave is going to be from these rising stars.
