Over the summer, indie rock upstarts Cults mentioned in an interview with Spinner the intention to re-tool the band’s debut self-titled album into a rap mixtape featuring rising MCs like Freddie Gibbs and Lil B. It’s hard to imagine the sultry and sunny tunes being anything other than the pop gems that they are. But Cults followed through and released the first track of the mixtape project Thursday: a remixed version of the jazzy “Bad Things,” featuring Freddie Gibbs rhyming alongside Madeline Follin‘s soulful vocals. The result is disorienting at first, but ultimately it’s a triumph of melding together two disparate genres of music. Let’s hope Cults can hold up its promise of getting Lil B on board for the next song.
