Last month, Kevin Morby performed to a sold out Mississippi Studios. You’d think that with the lack of personal space there would also be a lack of intimacy, but you would be wrong. Morby created the perfect balance of intimacy and warmth with honest conversations, direct eye contact and a notable level of enthusiasm just to be there.
Morby is touring in support of his latest album, Singing Saw. His third solo release proves that he’s truly developed his own way of storytelling in a memorable way. Even from recordings, Morby’s narratives give you the sense that a close friend is confiding in you, rather than a complete stranger. The vulnerability Morby demonstrates through his music and especially through his performance is one that I haven’t seen in a long time. I went to watch Morby alone that night at Mississippi Studios, but I left feeling like I had all the company that I needed.
You can catch Kevin Morby at Pickathon this year and listen to my favorite off of Singing Saw below, “I Have Been to the Mountain”.
