There are probably other generally eccentric alt-country duos composed of married couples, but New Mexico transplants¬†The Handsome Family¬†can’t really help but take the cake. Seeing Brett and Rennie Sparks perform as The Handsome Family is essentially a 50/50 cocktail country cartoon tunes and the best stage banter you’ve ever been privy to. In the midst of their songs about owls, frogs, eels, octopuses, etc. (their new album Wilderness doesn’t contain a single song that isn’t the name of an animal), they’ll discuss a wide range of topics such as things they found in their hotel room, infomercials they’ve never seen before, and how everyone in the room should pool together whatever pills they have in their pockets, crush them up, and let Brett snort them, all for the possibility that he’ll play guitar better.

Touring with The Handsome Family from Albuquerque, New Mexico are Wildewood, a equal parts gentle and jarring Americana rock trio punctuated by Meredith Wilder’s bright soaring voice and Alex’s burning telecaster wizardry. Representing Seattle were The Annie Ford Band led by none other than the country hollering, fiddle shredder Annie Ford herself. Look below for more pictures of the acts.
