Gone Country: Celebrate Her
A weekly column about all things country.
Posted by Melissa DanielsSongs that celebrate her
Somedays, us ladies just need a little pick-me-up. It’s nice to be reminded how cherished and admired we are, be it by a lover or a friend. Love makes the world go round, and while all genres have their own laundry list of love songs for women, there’s something to be said about the endearing authenticity that is country music.
As the saying goes, women have high standards because (country) music has taught us how a man should treat a lady. It’s also taught us how a man should NOT treat a lady. But thanks to Patty Loveless, we know what to do with ”lying, cheating, cold deadbeating, two-timing, double dealing, mean mistreating, loving heart(s).” And how to handle abusive men with a little “Gunpowder and Lead.” Thanks Miranda.
With the fact that some of the longest lasting celebrity relationships in the music industry belong to country couples, I’d say these guys must be doing something right. The most powerful quality music posesses is the ability to move it’s listeners to emotion. Often times, the music is a mere vehicle that allows lyric to manipulate a persons feeling. And there’s nothing wrong with romanticizing the silly little ways women seem to mystify men. In fact, that is very much a part of what makes country music country. The romanticizing of life’s little joys, pains, and simply stated, everyday life.
The playlist below is a pure celebration of the little idiosyncratic tendencies, flaws and fetishes that make women who they are. If love is about being able to see an imperfect person perfectly, then these songs embody just that. Women ebb and flow on the emotional spectrum far more than they’d would like to admit. But when she’s having one of those days, or she just simply wants to celebrate what makes her unique, these songs should serve as a sweet little pick-me-up.
