Decibel Festival 2012 Preview: Loscil

From rhythmic and turbulent ambience to the stark cold tones of dissonance that move along at a glacial pace, Vancouver’s Loscil creates an atmosphere that’s as welcoming as it is foreboding. With his namesake based off the ‘looping oscillator’ function found in CSound, you can correctly assume that the backbone of Loscil’s sparse textural atmosphere is based on a netting of loops. His music is a direct aural accompaniment for what the Northwest goes through every fall and winter. The clouds and rain make everything and everyone move along at a slower and more introspective pace but there’s still an immense world of beauty laying in the calm of the grey tonal wash that hovers over everything if you wish to find it.
