My first encounter with Spain-based DJ and producer John Talabot was hearing the single “Destiny” on a well-crafted DJ mix. A hypnotizing track, it manages to be haunting and utterly danceable at the same time. I listened to it endlessly for a week.
It goes without saying that “Destiny” is one of the standout songs off of fIN, an album filled with contemplative (but not melancholy) music that falls somewhere between mid-tempo house, disco and psych pop with synth-heavy leanings.
While a few of Talabot’s songs incorporate guest vocals, most draw their energy from unexpected sound samples, like the blood-curdling screams on “Oro y Sangre” or the nighttime jungle chirpings found in “Depak Ine.”
Vocalist/producer Pional will join Talabot for his Northwest debut at Decibel Festival.
