Decibel Festival 2012 Preview: Julianna Barwick

Some friends and I had once discussed the idea of building a Tumblr dedicated to naming new genres of music. Our first specimen was dubbed pious-core, hinting at the fragile and church-like aesthetic of electronic musicians like Active Child. If our project had ever come to fruition, Julianna Barwick would have fit right into our inaugural entry. Not surprisingly, Barwick draws inspiration from years of singing with a rural church choir in Louisiana to inform her wordless and ethereal sound. Her delicate voice is like a veil draped lightly over looped instrumental tracks, creating a sound that’s positively transcendental.
