There’s a chilled synthpop vibe descending on Doug Fir Lounge July 22nd as two top exponents of leftfield, goth influenced electronica Cold Cave and Austra bring their cool sounds to Portland.

Cold Cave’s latest album Cherish the Light Years sees Wesley Eisold expand on the brittle sounds of the bands breakthrough debut Love Comes Close. With fantastic pop tunes such as The Great Pan Is Dead and Confetti the album is essential for lovers of the 80′s electronic music heyday or fans of newer revivalists. Cold Cave being one of the best groups in the latter category. Think New Order meets MGMT.

Prominent appearances within the show are expected by the bands sharp cheekbones, leather jackets, dark shades, stabbing synth breaks, danceable tunes and probably dry ice. All adding up to an infectious and enjoyable show.

Supporting Cold Cave tonight are Austra led by Canadian singer Katy Stelmanis who also owe a debt to that glassy goth synth sound but skew things further and produce tunes unlike anyone else, primarily due to the sonorous voice of their hypnotic lead vocalist.

Indeed Stelmanis’ voice would be powerful enough to overshadow the music were it not so damn catchy. Listen to their album Feel It Break, in particular the song Lose It and if you don’t find yourself humming along, out loud, within ten seconds you obviously have no soul.

Bring your dancing shoes or whatever else it takes to throw the angular shapes required tonight.
