During a recent live show in Helsinki, Finland Björk dedicated her song “Declare Independence” to the group Pussy Riot.

Pussy Riot are a feminist-punk collective based in Russia that have made guerilla-style music and political art performances over the last year or so. The band’s impromptu appearance at Moscow’s Christ the Saviour Cathedral on Februrary 21 ended with the arrest of three female members; an official decision from a judge will be made August 17 post a two week hearing.

Those arrested are officially charged with “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred” and face up to three years in prison. Björk is not alone in her outspoken defense of the performers. Other musicians such as Bikini Kill, Ad Rock, and Madonna – among others – have voiced their support for whom Amnesty International has called “prisoners of conscience.”

Björk made a short statement on her website, saying “…I fiercely don’t agree with them being put to jail because of their peaceful protest performance…the Russian authorities should let them go home…”
