Bill Doss, most famous for being a founding member of Olivia Tremor Control and The Elephant 6 Recording Company, has died at the age of 43. The announcement came via OTC’s official website earlier today.
He was a long-time musician and singer-songwriter that helped give rise to a fertile psych-pop music scene in Athens, GA in the 1990s. Doss did so alongside Will Cullen Hart, Jeff Mangum and Robert Schneider. The projects he was involved in include Olivia Tremor Control, The Sunshine Fix and The Apples in Stereo.
OTC’s two albums were landmarks, idiosyncratic arrangements of Doss and Hart’s penchant for 1960′s pop music, experimental sounds, tape loops, feedback, and more. 1996′s Music From The Unrealized Script “Dusk at Cubist Castle” and the 1999 follow-up Black Foliage: Animation Music Volume One continue to enchant and perplex listeners.
In mourning, Olivia Tremor Control responded, “we are devastated by the loss of our brother Bill Doss. We are at a loss for words…” The cause of death has not been published as of yet.
Spend a moment to hear the Olivia Tremor Control track “Paranormal Echoes” below; Doss’ unique, vibrant contributions to music will be missed.
