John Darnielle and his band The Mountain Goats are some of the most prolific musicians on the scene today. They have currently produced 13 albums and a litany of unofficial bootlegs, demos and recordings litter the internet. Their music is a mix of light rock with heavy folk influences.
The first recordings are home-made lo-fi recordings that showcase the poetry of Darnielle set to his acoustic guitar. The tapes were made in his apartment, often recorded directly onto a boombox, giving the music an intimate sound. The early work is rough, painful and beautiful. His songs tell stories of heart break, addiction and redemption. Their album We Shall All Be Healed is especially poignant and relevant to Portlanders, as it tells the story of Darnielle’s own struggles with methamphetamine addiction in the Rose City.
As the members of the group have matured, so has their music, but it still retains the biting intelligence that made them so innovative.
Since the band’s inception, it has featured a rotating roster of musicians with Darnielle leading the way. Their latest release, All Eternals Deck is a step away from their traditional lo-fi roots but still brings the power that fans of the group know and love.
Their live shows are a treat for fans, as the breaks between songs are peppered with stories about the band, the stories behind songs, and stories behind, well, everything. Darnielle is a storyteller, a skill he has refined over the years through his music.
The Mountain Goats are currently at work on their latest album Transcendental Youth, which is set to be released this year. The album is currently still in the development stages. The tracks, title and themes are still subject to change. Only one thing is for sure, that it will continue the legacy of the Mountain Goats strong, poetic brand of folk.
The show will take place at the Mission Theater on June 25. Tickets are available for $22.50. This is a 21+ event.
