One of the great lions of the northwest is coming back to Portland on Saturday. Mark Lanegan will be filling the Wonder Ballroom with his bellowing, crooning bassoon of a voice. He’s on tour to promote his recent release, Blues Funeral. This album brings a new element to Lanegan’s already varied sound. Synth-laden tracks like “Ode to Sad Disco” (check it out below) show a willingness to embrace the increasingly electronic music-scape, which is always a gamble for anyone over 40. Luckily for us, he pulls it off. The new album is soulful, bluesy, often danceable, but consistent in its delivery of rock and roll purity. Here is a musician who has watched our northwestern scene move through all of its incarnations, and he’s accomplished this without fading into the darkness. While his music is often moody and run through with melancholy, Mark Lanegan is a man who has much to celebrate. He has survived.
